How often have you read the phrase “Download This Free Report Now!” Only to find that you had to insert your name and email address into a box first before you were allowed to get your hands on it.
You then download your report and find that there is no new information inside. No great strategies, no real advice you can use. Just the same old rehashed info you have seen time and time again.
Well I suppose, what can you expect for nothing. Well, I tell you what, when I part with my email address and end up on someone’s list I expect to get more than a load of outdated trash. Otherwise I am off that list faster than you can say “Optin”.
Realistically it is an old optin trick that is still used these days, even by some of the top names in internet marketing. You basically take a old PLR ebook/report and spend a few minutes on it adding in a few affiliate links and a new copyright message and you can give it away to attract new list members.
I have to admit that I did the very same thing myself in my early days of list building. It was my first attempt at building a list. My incentive to get on my list was nothing more than a piece of rehashed PLR. Basically, I was putting so much time into ensuring I had some great content for my follow up emails, that I just never gave much thought to my initial gift. I never realized how bad this was until I got an email from someone who had downloaded the report and complained that it was almost the same as one he had downloaded the previous week when he had signed up to some guru’s list. Needless to say, I was seen as the fraud who had copied the Gurus work and was cheating my way into trying to get people to join my list.
That taught me a fast sharp lesson on how easy it is to ruin your reputation with low quality content that is going to be similar to that of other marketers, even when you think you are giving it away for free. Reality is, you are not giving it away for free. You are expecting someone to join your list and read your future emails, many of which will be promoting products. In reality by giving away your gift, you expect to profit from it later by gaining sales from some of the people who downloaded it.
Just in case you were wondering, the person who complained to me is still on my first subscribers list. Actually he is on two others as well. That’s the value of taking out the time to personally respond to any list subscriber who sends you some constructive criticism. As long as you remember to apologize and thank them for helping you, by pointing out your errors.
Now, if I could attract an email complaint that early in my list building ventures, you would think that most other marketers who do the same thing would also get similar complaints. Well, they do, I know that for an absolute fact. What I also know is the general rule of thumb is to just ignore such complaints, because it is a numbers game. Think about it – If so many big names in the marketing world can manage to have huge, highly profitable product launches pushing out a product that turns out to be nothing more than re-hashed crap, do you honestly think they are going to bother putting any real effort into generating decent reports to give away in order to build up their subscribers lists?
