When Fred mentioned the importance of Google Analytics for all your websites in his post Google Analytics. You have to use it!!!. he was absolutely correct. Now with Google Instant on the scene it is ever more important, because it is actually possible to view exactly how your visitors are using Google Instant in order to find your website.
Just one of the things you can discover is what keyword suggestions your visitors have taken from Google Instant and what letters they typed in prior to taking up that suggestion. If you would like to setup your Google Analytics account to be able to track Google instant, simply follow the instructions below.
If you do not already have a Google analytics account and would like to view video tutorials on how to use google Analytics, please refer to Fred’s post of Google Analytics. You have to use it!!!.
1: On the overview screen of Google analytics, select the “Add New Profile” link.
2: Next, you want to select “Add A Profile For An Existing Domain”, then find the correct account from the drop down menu. Now give the new profile a name that is easy for you to remember, then click “Finish”. By doing this, you are creating a new profile that is now going to capture all the raw data from your website.
3: On the overview screen you now want to select the “Edit” link for the new profile you have just created. Now select the “Add Filter” link on the right side of the “Filters Applied To Profile” table.
4: Create a new filter by inserting the following……
Filter Type: Customer Filter > Advanced
Field A -> Extract A
Referral: [?|&]oq=([^&]*)
Field B -> Extract B
Campaign Term: (.*)
Output To -> Constructor
Campaign Term: $B1|$A1
Field A Required: Yes
Field B Required: Yes
Override Output Field: Yes
Case Sensitive: No
Click the “Save Changes” button to create the filter.
5: Now simply wait a few days until you have amassed some data in your new profile and you will be able to then view the results.
Go to your keywords report and search for \| using the keyword filter.
You will then be able to see results that will show the search term that has been used and what letters were actually typed prior to one of Google’s suggested keyword phrases being accepted.
